Cable Standing Hip Extension
The cable standing hip extension is a cable exercise that targets the glutes, with the hamstrings and quadriceps assisting.
How to do the cable standing hip extension
- Attach a cable to a low pulley and stand facing away from the machine.
- Place the cable around your ankle and stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
- Keep your core engaged and your back straight throughout the exercise.
- Slowly extend your leg straight back, squeezing your glutes at the top of the movement.
- Pause for a moment, then return to the starting position.
- Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
- Switch sides and repeat with the other leg.
Sets and reps
For muscle growth, 3–4 sets of 8–12 reps with 60–90 seconds of rest is a proven starting point. For strength, use a heavier weight for 3–5 sets of 3–6 reps and rest 2–3 minutes. Add a little weight once you hit the top of your rep range on every set.
Muscles worked
The main muscle is the glutes. The hamstrings and quadriceps work as secondary muscles. See all glute exercises or every cable exercise.
