Barbell Standing Twist
The barbell standing twist is a barbell exercise that targets the abs, with the obliques and lower back assisting.
How to do the barbell standing twist
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and hold a barbell in front of your chest with both hands, palms facing down.
- Engage your core and keep your back straight throughout the exercise.
- Slowly twist your torso to the right, pivoting on your feet and hips, while keeping your lower body stable.
- Pause for a moment at the end of the twist, then slowly return to the starting position.
- Repeat the twist to the left side.
- Continue alternating twists for the desired number of repetitions.
Sets and reps
For muscle growth, 3–4 sets of 8–12 reps with 60–90 seconds of rest is a proven starting point. For strength, use a heavier weight for 3–5 sets of 3–6 reps and rest 2–3 minutes. Add a little weight once you hit the top of your rep range on every set.
Muscles worked
The main muscle is the abs. The obliques and lower back work as secondary muscles. See all ab exercises or every barbell exercise.
